Williamsburg Radiation Therapy Center

The opening of the Radiation Therapy Center in December 1996 has made Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center a true cancer center. It is now possible to coordinate the care between services with Radiation, Williamsburg Hematology/Oncology and Williamsburg Community Medical Group located in the same building. This allows for many necessary ancillary services, including primary care to be performed at the same facility. The Radiation Center, a $2.7 million project is a joint effort between Williamsburg Community Hospital and Riverside Health System.

Due to the superior technology and state-of-the-art computer systems, the center provides greater accuracy in treatment methods. Because radiation therapy is the most computer dependent area of medicine, the center offers a new FOCUS three-dimensional treatment planning system.

Electron beam therapy is available on the dual energy linear accelerator, which currently has energies of both 6 and 10 meV's for photons and five different electron energies. The physics support is given through the Cancer Treatment Center at Riverside Regional Medical Center as well as the staff at Williamsburg Radiation Center. The department has a new Phillips simulator with an excellent fluoroscopic image and a SL-15 dual energy linear accelerator to fully utilize the technology capacity of treating cancer patients. The center is able to offer systemic radioisotopes including Strontium 89 and Samarium. Included in the goals for the Cancer Program is obtaining approval by the American College of Radiology as well as the approval of the local hospital for the implementation of a prostate brachytherapy team.

The Williamsburg Radiation Therapy Center is located on Treyburn Drive across the street from Williamsburg Community Hospital.
