Dorothy G. Hoefer Comprehensive Breast Center
Percutaneous Breast Biopsy
As early detection of breast cancer has become the standard of care, it is often necessary to perform image guided tissue biopsies to detect or exclude breast cancer. Percutaneous breast biopsy has revolutionized the management of clinically occult, mammographically detected abnormalities. Also, most palpable abnormalities are now being evaluated with breast imaging and biopsied percutaneously rather than surgically.
In the Dorothy G. Hoefer Comprehensive Breast Center, tissue biopsies are performed using ultrasound, stereotactic and MRI guidance. Our various techniques include cyst aspiration; fine needle aspiration with cytology, core need biopsy, and vacuum assisted needle sampling of breast abnormalities. State of the art equipment and radiologist expertise allows accurate targeting and sampling of the area in question. Tissue samples are sent to the Sentara pathologists, who issue a report within three days. Results will be given to the patient by the radiologist and/or breast health care coordinator.
