Athletic Trainer Certified (ATC)

Certified athletic trainers are highly educated and skilled health care professionals who specialize in preventing, recognizing, managing and rehabilitating injuries that result from physical activity. As part of a complete health care team, the certified athletic trainer works under the direction of a licensed physical therapist and in cooperation with other health care professionals, athletics administrators, coaches and parents. Certified athletic trainers are integral members of the athletic health care team in secondary schools, colleges and universities, sports medicine clinics, professional sports programs and other health care settings.

Education

Certified athletic trainers have, at minimum, a bachelor’s degree, usually in athletic training, health, physical education or exercise science. In addition, athletic trainers study human anatomy, human physiology, biomechanics, exercise physiology, athletic training, nutrition and psychology/counseling. Certified athletic trainers also participate in extensive clinical affiliations with athletic teams under appropriate supervision. Certified athletic trainers must fulfill the requirements for certification by the National athletic Trainers’ Association Board of Certification, Inc. (NATABOC).

Athletic Trainers in Sentara

Athletic trainers in the Sentara Rehabilitation Network provide a variety of athletes and non-athletes alike in a clinical outreach setting. They help plan and implement physical therapy protocols for all orthopedic injuries in physical therapy clinics under the supervision of licensed physical therapists. Sentara athletic trainers also provide outreach care to local school systems and their athletes. Other projects in which Sentara’s athletic trainers are involved in include back safety classes for the working community and post/pre rehabilitation sessions for those patients either preparing for surgery or seeking a continuation of skilled therapy after their discharge from physical therapy.
