Cardiovascular Technology Program Frequently Asked Questions

How do the three specialties of cardiovascular technology differ?
The Invasive Cardiovascular Professional performs/reviews a baseline assessment, evaluates patient response to diagnostic or interventional maneuvers and medications during cardiac catheterization laboratory procedures. He/she provides patient care and administers medications commonly used in the cardiac catheterization laboratory under the direction of a qualified physician. The Invasive Cardiovascular Professional also acts as the first assistant during the diagnostic and therapeutic catheterization procedures.

The Non-invasive/Echo cardiographer and Peripheral Vascular Technologist use computerized equipment to direct high frequency sound waves at the heart and blood vessels to produce images that reveal their anatomy and function. He/she records the images on digital equipment for evaluation by the physician. His/her work is generally performed independently.

What hours does a cardiovascular technologist work?
The cardiovascular technologist employed in a hospital works primarily day shift hours Monday through Friday. However, he/she is responsible for being on-call during the evening and night hours, weekends and holidays and may be required to come to work during those call hours. Those who work in physician offices and clinics are usually not required to be on-call or work evenings, nights, weekends or holiday hours.

Where can I find a job as a cardiovascular technologist?
Cardiovascular technologists are employed in hospitals, clinics, physician offices, imaging centers, operating rooms, clinical research laboratories and the biomedical industry.

Will the School find me a job when I graduate?
Prior to graduation students at main and non-main campus locations are guided through the Sentara Healthcare employment application process.  Employment assistance is only provided within Sentara.  Graduates are actively recruited for positions within Sentara Healthcare; however, there is no obligation to work for Sentara.  While most graduates readily obtain positions, employment with Sentara is not guaranteed.

Will my education or work experience in another allied health field be considered in meeting the prerequisites and in selection for this program?
Training and experience in other allied health fields are evaluated and considered when selecting students. Individuals with degrees in medicine, nursing, biology, sports medicine, or related fields may have substitute courses applied to the prerequisite requirements.
