History Of The Program
The Cardiovascular Technology Program began in 1982 to provide trained professionals in the fields of invasive and non-invasive cardiovascular medicine. The Program offers three specialties in cardiovascular technology and prepares students to function in the specialty of their choice.

The Cardiovascular Technology Lab at the Sentara School of Health Professions.
Accreditation
The Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) accredits the Sentara School of Health Professions. All three specialities of the Cardiovascualr Technology Program are also accredited by the Commision on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). 
 
Overview of the Program/Role of the Graduate
The program offers 3 different specialties of study: invasive cardiovascular technology and non-invasive cardiovascular technology, which includes echosonography and peripheral vascular technology. Students must select a field of study prior to starting the Program. Specific courses related to the particular field of study and clinical experiences are integrated with courses in fundamentals, pharmacology and communications throughout the Program.

The technologists assists the physicians and surgeons in performing many diagnostic and therapeutic procedures both in the hospital and in outpatient settings.  Invasive cardiovascular technologist function in the cardiac catheterization laboratory assisting the physician in performing pediatric and adult diagnostic and interventional procedures. The non-invasive cardiovascular technologist/echosonographer performs ultrasound-imaging of the heart. The peripheral vascular technologist performs ultrasound-imaging of all blood vessels.
 
Program Enrollment/Length/Times
The program is offered in January and July of each year. It is a full time, daytime Program and is 18 months in length.

Pre-Requisite Notice:  Math 151 (Liberal Arts) from a Virginia Community College is not acceptable for College Algebra.

Math Review Sessions
The School offers Math review sessions to help applicants prepare for the NET and HOBET pre-admission test. (Registered Nursing, Cardiovascular and Surgical Technology Programs only.)  The sessions are from 6-9 p.m. at the school and there is no cost to attend.  The Registered Nursing Distance Learning Program has Math Review Sessions available in Hampton.

Faculty To Student Ratio
The faculty to student ratio in the classroom is 1 to 20. In the clinical area, a one to one relationship is maintained between student and preceptor.

Potential Career Opportunities
Prior to graduation students at main and non-main campus locations are guided through the Sentara Healthcare employment application process.  Employment assistance is only provided within Sentara.  Graduates are actively recruited for positions within Sentara Healthcare; however, there is no obligation to work for Sentara.  While most graduates readily obtain positions, employment with Sentara is not guaranteed.

Salary Potential
The entry level salary in Sentara Healthcare is between $40,248 to $50,232 annually, but will vary with the specialty chosen. Potential earnings can be greater than $55,000 annually because of call pay and overtime.
