History Of The Course
The Care Partner Course began in 1994 to meet the hospital practice setting need for a multi skilled individual who could provide basic patient care as well as a wide range of other higher level skills such as sterile procedures, EKGs and phlebotomy.

Overview of the Course/Role of the Graduate

Learn more about Care Partner Court at the Sentara School of Health Professions in the the DVD, now online.
The Course is offered twice a year in April and October. It is a full time, daytime program and is 10 weeks in length.  The Course is designed to educate students in providing basic and higher level skills to patients in an acute care (hospital) setting. Students complete courses in Fundamentals of Patient Care and Communication for the Healthcare provider along with a clinical course where they apply the skills they have learned in the classroom and skills lab to the patient care setting.
Graduates of the Course receive a certificate of completion. Care Partners are an integral part of the nursing care team in Sentara hospitals.

Faculty To Student Ratio
The faculty to student ratio in the classroom is 1 to 20-40. The faculty to student ratio is 1-10 in the skills lab and 1 to 8 for clinical experiences. 
 
Potential Career Opportunities
Prior to graduation students at main and non-main campus locations are guided through the Sentara Healthcare employment application process.  Employment assistance is only provided within Sentara.  Graduates are actively recruited for positions within Sentara Healthcare; however, there is no obligation to work for Sentara.  While most graduates readily obtain positions, employment with Sentara is not guaranteed.

Salary Potential
The beginning salary for a full time position as a Care Partner is approximately $20,155 annually.
