Overview Of The Course/Role Of The Graduate The Course is designed to provide the student with the knowledge and skills necessary for entry-level employment as a monitor surveillance technician or a telemetry technician. Classroom study emphasizes the interpretation of arrhythmia and includes instruction in basic anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, and patient care concepts pertinent to the cardiac patient. Clinical study includes fundamentals of monitoring, equipment operation, procedural techniques, recognition of abnormalities of the electrocardiogram, and the relationship of the electrocardiogram to the methods of patient care and treatment.
Graduates of this Course receive a certificate of completion and may be employed in hospitals, clinics, doctor's offices or other health care settings where EKG monitoring is required. Registry, certification, or licensure is not available in the field of monitor surveillance.
Course Enrollment/Length/Times The Course is offered twice a year in January and July. It is a 12 week daytime Course. The Course is divided into a prerequisite Rhythm Analysis course taught during the first six weeks and a Monitor Surveillance course taught during the second six weeks. In the Rhythm Analysis course, students attend class for six hours a week and have 15 hours a week of self directed study with faculty oversight. In the second six weeks, Monitor Surveillance students attend six hours of class each week and have 24 hours of clinical experience each week.
