History of the Course

The Nurse Aide Education Course became a part of Sentara School of Health Professions in January 2005. It was created to help meet the growing demand for certified nurse aides in nursing homes and to provide nurse aides for Sentara’s Lifecare division. The 7-week course  prepares graduates to take the certification exam with the Virginia State Board of Nursing.

Approval Status
The Course  is approved by the Virginia State Board of Nursing.
 
Overview of the Course /Role of the Graduate
The Course is offered once per year in August and is full time, day time.  The Course is 7 weeks in length and includes lecture, skills lab and clinical experiences. The lecture and skills lab experiences are provided at the school and the clinical experiences are provided in various nursing homes within Sentara. Students spend 157.5 total hours in the Course  with 45 in class, and 112.5 in the clinical setting.

Graduates of the Course are able to provide direct patient care to residents in a variety of settings such as long-term care or a rehabilitative facility, in the home and in some hospitals.

Number of Students Accepted Per Class
The Course accepts approximately 10 students in each class but enrollment may change depending on the needs of Sentara LifeCare.
 
Faculty to Student Ratio
The average faculty to student ratio is 1 to 8 in the clinical setting and approximately 1:10 in the classroom setting.
 
Potential Career Opportunities
Prior to graduation students at main and non-main campus locations are guided through the Sentara Healthcare employment application process.  Employment assistance is only provided within Sentara.  Graduates are actively recruited for positions within Sentara Healthcare; however, there is no obligation to work for Sentara.  While most graduates readily obtain positions, employment with Sentara is not guaranteed.

Salary Potential
The entry-level salary for a full time position in Sentara is between $16,494 to $20,092 per year.
