How is this diploma program different from programs that offer an associate's degree or a bachelor's degree in nursing?
Our program is a hospital based diploma program affiliated with Sentara Healthcare. The distinguishing feature of our curriculum is the significant amount of clinical experience provided. The fundamental philosophy is to provide classroom instruction and skills lab experiences to reinforce class content before students care for patients in any setting. This framework allows for a constant repetition of theory with reinforcement of those concepts clinically. Students from associate’s degree programs, bachelor's degree programs and hospital based diploma programs are all eligible to sit for the same state licensure examination.
The college prerequisites required for our program can be transferred to a college or university at a later date in order to work towards a degree. In the Tidewater area, graduates of our program are able to transition to a RN to BSN articulation program with relative ease and little repetition of content.
When can I apply to the school?
Effective with the Aug 07 program any 18 of the prerequisites credits have to be completed prior to submitting an application for admission.
Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis.
Where do I take the college prerequisite courses?
You may take the required college courses at any accredited college or university in or out of Virginia. Questions regarding the acceptability of courses should be directed to Admissions at

What is the job market like in Hampton Roads? For the past 3 years, all of the graduates who wanted jobs were able to find them within 2 months after graduation.
Does Sentara guarantee me a job when I finish?
Prior to graduation students at main and non-main campus locations are guided through the Sentara Healthcare employment application process. Employment assistance is only provided within Sentara. Graduates are actively recruited for positions within Sentara Healthcare; however, there is no obligation to work for Sentara. While most graduates readily obtain positions, employment with Sentara is not guaranteed.
What does the preadmission test cover?
The Nurse Entrance Test (NET) is a 2.5 hour computer based test that assesses reading and math skills, learning styles, test-taking anxiety and measures the individuals response to social and stressful situations. A study guide for the test is available at the school.
How important is GPA in the admission process?
Your GPA (Grade Point Average) for the prerequisites courses is one of the main criteria used to determine acceptance into the program. A GPA above 2.5 enhances your opportunity to be selected for admission.
How do your graduates perform on the licensing exam?
Our graduates have a long standing reputation for performing extremely well the first time they take the State Board of Nursing exam. The current pass rate is 100%.
