Surgical Technology Program
History of the Program
The Surgical Technology Program began in the early 1950's to meet the demand for skilled and professional surgical technologists in the operating rooms of Sentara Healthcare. In 1999 due to the increased demand for surgical technologists the school began offering two programs a year.

| Surgical Technology Skills Lab at the Sentara School of Health Professions | Accreditation The Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) accredits the Sentara School of Health Professions. The Surgical Technology Program is also programmatically accredited by ABHES (10/06) and is an affiliate member of the Association of Surgical Technologist.
Overview Of The Program/Role Of The Graduate The curriculum is structured according to the guidelines provided by the Association of Surgical Technologists, Inc. Core Curriculum for Surgical Technology, Fifth Edition. The full time day Program is 12 months in length and offered twice per year in January and July. In the first semester students complete a course in fundamentals of patient care, communication and fundamentals of surgery. The first semester is primarily in the classroom and skills lab setting. In the second and third semesters students attend classes in surgical procedures and spend three (3) days a week scrubbing in, on a variety of surgical procedures, in the operating rooms at Sentara hospitals and outpatient surgical centers and specialty rotations sites.
Graduates of the Program are prepared to work in the operating room in a variety of settings. They set up the room for surgical procedures and pass instruments to the surgeon during surgery while adhering to strict sterile technique. They may be employed in hospitals, ambulatory surgery centers, outpatient centers and in physician practices.

Scheduling NET and HOBET Testing (PDF file)
Math Review Sessions The School offers Math review sessions to help applicants prepare for the NET and HOBET pre-admission test. (Registered Nursing, Cardiovascular and Surgical Technology Programs only.) The sessions are from 6-9 p.m. at the school and there is no cost to attend. The Registered Nursing Distance Learning Program has Math Review Sessions available in Hampton.

Faculty To Student Ratio The faculty to student ratio in the classroom is 1 to 12. In the clinical area, however, the ratio is one student to one preceptor. Students are assigned to a particular preceptor and work one - on - one with that person in that specialty.
Consumer Disclosure Salary Potential The entry-level salary for a full time position in Sentara Healthcare is approximately $32,600 annually.
