New Strides in Treating Lung Cancer View procedure Over the Web
Through a small, under arm incision, Sentara cardiothoracic surgeons remove a cancerous portion of their patient’s lung. See this procedure first hand over the internet by visiting Sentara’s video archive.
For most patients, the lobectomy is enough. For others radiation or chemotherapy will follow. Marie Hadley, a former marathon runner who had battled recurring lung cancer for four years, finally underwent the procedure in 2005. Hear about her story. Often, symptoms of lung cancer don’t occur until the disease has progressed. Persistent coughing, shortness of breath and lung pain should be evaluated and coughing up blood needs immediate attention by a physician.
Money in the bank.
Sentara is banking that its employees like a cost savings as much as the next person. To motivate employees to make healthier lifestyle choices, the organization launched Mission Health, a new wellness and disease management program.
Employees who elect medical coverage this year through Sentara can save real dollars on their medical plan coverage— about $450 per year—by undergoing a health evaluation and meeting with a health coach, if needed. For following established treatments for conditions like diabetes and cardiovascular disease additional discounts are available. Most of all, employees can win by becoming healthier individuals. Improving health starts at home.
It’s not that easy being green... or is it? Recycling made easy at Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center
Going green for Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center couldn’t get any easier. Jetting over one of the biggest hurdles to recycling, hospital departments now have recycling bins— all with no sorting required. Recycling partner Tidewater Fiber Corporation has agreed to accept paper, plastics, metals, and glass from the same bin. In its first month, the hospital recycled more than a ton of material—about 3,700 pounds to be exact—along with 83 printer cartridges and 108 light bulbs. Williamsburg is the first hospital in the Sentara system and the first medical center in Hampton Roads to implement such a robust recycling program. With a first-year goal to reduce solid waste by 50%, the hospital hopes to eventually recycle up to 65% of the solid waste coming from its campus.
