Members of the Team: General Updates

Sentara’s Performance Plus Program Fully Funded
The 2006 Performance Plus pool has been fully funded thanks to the diligent efforts of all employees throughout the year in several areas including: increased efforts to manage expenses, attention to detail in capturing revenue charge opportunities and continuing commitment to our ongoing patient-safety initiatives. Pending all approval processes and audits, Performance Plus payments will occur in early April. Check with your business units for their 2006 goals results or visit the Performance Plus site on WaveNet for additional details. The Performance Plus program is a recognition program developed to thank Sentara employees for helping the organization meet its progressive goals.

Members of the Team Video Coming Soon
Sentara staff are putting the finishing touches on a professionally produced, employee-focused video designed to help promote Sentara’s mission, vision and values to new and prospective employees, as well as patients, their families and the community. Created with the participation of more than 30 employees across the system, the video will showcase the diversity of Sentara’s workforce and demonstrate how each member of the team plays a key role in improving health every day. The video will also speak to the broad spectrum of care offered at Sentara facilities, our focus on innovation, quality outcomes, customer service, patient and employee safety and teamwork. It will be shown during new employee orientation and eventually broadcast on the in-house TV channel at all Sentara hospitals.

Sentara’s Patient Advocate Program Turns 15
Sentara’s Patient Advocacy Service celebrates its 15-year anniversary this year. The program was started to provide a formal avenue for patients to share concerns. Patient Advocates intercept and rectify small grievances, represent Administration, work closely with Risk Management and provide patient feedback. They are trained to improve service delivery using the continuous quality improvement process. The Joint Commission and CMS recognize Patient Advocates and continue to work with them on a national and state level. The program is currently in place at Sentara Bayside Hospital, Sentara CarePlex Hospital, Sentara Heart Hospital, Sentara Leigh Hospital and Sentara Norfolk General Hospital and Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital.

eCare Update
eCare will transform the way Sentara provides care for its patients by establishing an electronic medical records (EMR) system, allowing staff and physicians to work in a nearly paperless environment, automate many manual processes, and eliminate the need to interpret written orders. Like many Sentara initiatives, eCare is being introduced in stages, with implementation in the hospitals beginning in 2008 with Sentara Leigh Hospital. Sentara Leigh employees have been receiving monthly demonstrations of various system features. In preparation for eCare, installation of new Emergency Department and Registration systems will occur in Sentara hospitals throughout 2007. Four Sentara Medical Group practices will be implementing and using eCare by the end of 2007: Family Practice Specialists and Urgent Care; Chimney Hill Medical Associates and Urgent Care; Chesapeake Medical Associates and Providence Road Family Practice and Urgent Care.
