A Message to Employees from Dave Bernd, CEO, Sentara Healthcare

All of us have been touched by cancer in some way. This year, the American Cancer Society estimates that 13,740 people in Virginia alone will die from the disease.* As disturbing as this number is, it is comforting to know that thanks to our improved ability to diagnose and treat cancer at its earliest stages, many more cancer patients will go on to live long, meaningful lives in spite of the disease.

At Sentara, the talented, experienced and compassionate team of professionals who make up our Sentara Cancer Network strive hard every day to help area cancer patients have the best outcome possible, the best chance of recovery. While providing innovative treatment and cutting edge research are among our top priorities, an equally important goal is to provide each cancer patient with compassion and hope along the way. Compassion during diagnosis, encouragement during treatment, and hope during recovery.

It is difficult to imagine a more important and meaningful undertaking than to help a patient overcome a serious illness. I am extremely proud of and continually inspired by the dedication of all of our Sentara physicians, employees and volunteers – not only for your talents and expertise ― but also for the kindness and generosity of spirit with which you care for our patients.
