Sentara Norfolk Sleep Study Makes National News
The March 17, 2008, U.S. News and World Report online edition featured an article, “Starved for Sleep? Watch Your Waistline,” that references results from two studies at the Sleep Disorders Center at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. The studies included 1,000 men and women, and the findings indicate that those who reported sleeping less tended to weigh more. The article was picked up from HealthDay, a division of ScoutNews, LLC, a Norwalk, Conn.-based news syndication company. Read the article.

A March 1, 2008, article, “Online Records System Puts Patients in Driver’s Seat,” discussed the benefits of the electronic medical record (EMR), the February launch of Sentara eCare ® at Sentara Leigh Hospital and included quotes from Dr. David Levin.

Isle of Wight Medical Campus Makes News
An article in The Daily Press on February 29, 2008, announced the Isle of Wight County Board of Supervisor’s approval of a new, 42-acre Sentara medical campus as part of the planned St. Luke's Village neighborhood.

Channel 10 Promotes Hoefer Breast Center
WAVY-TV Channel 10 featured a story on February 20, 2008, about a high-risk breast cancer patient who underwent assessment at the Dorothy G. Hoefer Breast Center and then opted for a double mastectomy as an aggressive treatment option after consultation with physicians. The station aired contact information for the Center and upcoming breast cancer screening events.

Channel 3 Interviews Sentara Heart Transplant Patient
WTKR-TV Channel 3 ran a heart transplant segment February 14, 2008, featuring an interview with a 55-year-old patient awaiting a heart transplant at Sentara Heart Hospital. The segment mentioned the efforts of Dr. John Herre and his team to locate a heart for the patient.

Gloucester Medical Campus Featured
An article, "Sentara Opens Medical Campus, Eyes Expansion,” ran in the February 5, 2008, issue of The Daily Press to announce the opening of the new 36,000-square-foot Sentara Gloucester Medical Arts. The new facility features an urgent care facility and specialists in general surgery, orthopedics, allergy and surgical oncology. 

Sentara Williamsburg Recycling Efforts Praised
A business environment success story in the February 2, 2008, Virginia Gazette entitled, “Hospital Recycling on a Roll,” praised Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center staff and Green Team volunteers for their success with recycling 50 percent of the hospital’s paper, metal and plastics. Since becoming the first private commercial business in York County to recycle in Fall 2007, the hospital has expanded its recycling goal to 65 percent. 

Innovation Advisory Panel Report Nets Media Coverage
A national U.S. Commerce Department advisory committee — which included Sentara CEO Dave Bernd — issued a report in January 2008 that received coverage in a January 19th Virginian Pilot article, “Fostering Innovation,” and in a January 17th Daily Press article. The report made specific recommendations on how to measure the economic effects of innovation. Read the report online.
