Sentara Bayside Hospital Earns Accreditation in Nuclear Cardiology
Sentara Bayside Hospital's Radiology Department has earned accreditation from the American College of Radiology (ACR) in Nuclear Cardiology. This accreditation -- the first of three modules for which the department will be applying -- follows an eight-month-long effort to enhance and document the Nuclear Medicine Department’s quality control program. ACR accreditation is important not only to demonstrate capability and expertise in the field but also to meet new policy guidelines of payers that require accreditation for reimbursement.

Hemodialysis Reliable Outflow

New Option for Dialysis Patients
Dialysis patients who are catheter dependent, have exhausted all other access options, or have other compromising health issues may be good candidates for a new treatment, the Hemodialysis Reliable Outflow or “HeRO” Vascular Access Device®. The HeRO device is surgically implanted to provide patients with a successful under-the-skin vascular access for ongoing dialysis. Vascular surgeons at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital were the third site in the United States to implant the FDA-approved HeRO device. For more information, talk to your doctor, visit the Sentara Vascular Program online or call 1-800-SENTARA.

TARGIT Breast Radiation Trial at Sentara CarePlex
Sentara CarePlex Hospital is among only five leading centers in the United States and the only East Coast hospital enrolling patients in an international breast cancer trial of Targeted Intra-Operative Radiation Therapy, called the TARGIT trial. The promising new international study is offered at 22 locations worldwide.

Dr. Richard Hoefer and Sentara’s partners at Virginia Oncology Associates are working to determine if a single dose of radiation therapy applied during surgery, inside the cavity left by tumor removal, will offer the same therapeutic result as a weeklong, post-surgical daily radiation regimen. The conventional radiation regime is 6-8 weeks long. If this trial proves successful, it could speed women’s recovery from breast cancer and their return to normal living.
