Members of the Team: Auxiliary Updates

Sentara Obici Hospital Auxiliary
gift shop is offering senior citizens a 15 percent discount on all items on the first Monday of every month. The gift shop also held a summer sale from June 30 - July 18. On July 11, the Auxiliary and Volunteer Department sponsored a medication class to educate seniors on interactions of multiple medications and the importance of reviewing medications with their physician and pharmacist.

Throughout the summer, 65 teens from Western Tidewater participated in the hospital's junior volunteer program. They worked in clinical and nonclinical areas of the hospital, as well as assisted with the hospital's Tobacco Free Environment campus launch on July 2. Pictured from left to right at the kickoff celebration are junior volunteers Desmond McGlone, Sharkey of the Suffolk Fire and Rescue Department, Raven Daniels and Dominique Blackwell.

Sentara Bayside Hospital – Sentara Princess Anne Campus Auxiliary board met in July to finalize plans for 2007 and 2008. Jeanette Lee, director of Volunteer Services has retired after 19 years. Eleanora McClenny, Volunteer Services secretary, has also retired. Their dedication and loyalty to the volunteers and auxiliary will be missed. Caroline Rawls was named director of Volunteer Services. Previously, she was the assistant manager of the hospital gift shop. Linda Portis was named assistant manager in the gift shop. Linda is no stranger to Sentara Bayside. She and her pet, “Annie,” have been visiting hospital patients. The gift shop is looking for volunteers. If you are interested in volunteering, contact Volunteer Services at 363-6639.

Sentara CarePlex Hospital Auxiliary raised more than $16,000 at its second annual golf tournament held at the Kiskiack Golf Course. Thanks to Ella McDonnell and her staff for organizing such a great event. The auxiliary also sponsored an Omega Jewelry sale. The auxiliary organized a Books Are Fun book sale at Port Warwick I and II for employees at the Port Warwick location. The auxiliary is helping Port Warwick’s Dorothy G. Hoefer Breast Center fund a special project to provide mammograms for uninsured women. The auxiliary has agreed to help those individuals to make sure their needs are met. Erika Smith and her team are working hard on this project with the support of the Sentara CarePlex Hospital Auxiliary. We hope no person goes without a mammogram when needed.

Sentara Leigh Hospital/Sentara Norfolk General Hospital Auxiliary has openings for volunteers in the gift shop at Sentara Leigh Hospital on Monday mornings and afternoons. Interested individuals may contact Joyce Abbey at 261-6940. Those interested in volunteering in the Sentara Norfolk General and Sentara Heart Hospital gift shops may contact Linda Burgess at 388-3027.

Sentara Leigh Hospital had 32 junior volunteers over the summer who assisted in hospital departments such as the gift shop, Emergency, Recovery, and various nursing units.

Sentara Norfolk General Hospital had 31 teen volunteers who helped in the gift shop, Emergency, PACU, various nursing units and the information desk. The hospital offers a teen volunteer program throughout the year. We are so lucky to have such wonderful adult and teen volunteers.

Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital Auxiliary has been very busy in 2008. The Auxiliary has provided more than $60,000 to several hospital departments. It has donated $40,000 to projects such as free newspapers to patients, floral arrangements to patients separated from family or who are alone, the Continuing Care Department, concierge-like taxi service to patients without transportation, and caps or Christmas stockings for all newborns. The auxiliary appreciates hospital staff with special “employee” sales in our gift shop.

The annual fundraising projects -- Love Light Tree, Silent Auction/Fashion Show Luncheon and the Ace of Hearts Tennis tournament --  raised more than $28,000. The auxiliary also sponsored six profitable vendor sales raising more than $20,000.

Our largest asset is our Gift Shop, managed by JoAnne Clarkson, which raised more than $90,000 in profit this past year. The auxiliary proudly donates $20,000 a year in scholarships to students going into the health care field. The auxiliary welcomes new president Linda Monacci.

Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center Auxiliary co-hosted a fundraiser on April 16 with the Williamsburg Winery. The event raised nearly $2,900. The auxiliary and Olde Towne Medical Center sponsored an Adult Screening Day on May 15 for uninsured community members aged 18 to 64 who are residents of James City County, Williamsburg or York County. Seventy-six individuals were screened. Thanks to auxiliary members: Pat Bowers, Carole Braund, Carlton Casey, Karene O’Hare, John O’Hare and Trenna Tankersley for their help. The second screening day will be in November.

At the April 17 board meeting, the board approved $19,200 to purchase a wireless, portable deaf talk device to facilitate communication with hearing impaired patients, a treadmill and a recumbent cycle for the hospital CARES department, items for the Patient Assistant Liaison program and ambassador uniforms for information desk volunteers. The Auxiliary Ice Cream Social was held July 4.
