Sentara CarePlex Hospital Testing High Dose Radiation
On July 1, 2008, WVEC-TV Channel 13 reported that Sentara CarePlex Hospital is one of five sites in the country testing a new, experimental high dose radiation designed to treat breast cancer. Specifically, physicians are testing to see whether one or two dose radiation can be as effective as the full treatment.

Sentara Praised for Low Ventilator Associated Pneumonia Rates
A document entitled “Teaching Hospital Highlights: Great Processes Generating Great Results” from the 5 Million Lives Campaign mentions Sentara Norfolk General Hospital along with a handful of other Institute for Healthcare Improvement mentor teaching hospitals nationwide that are achieving great results in their fight to eliminate Ventilator Associated Pneumonia (VAP). The document notes that Sentara Norfolk General Hospital has reduced VAP rates to 0.33 cases per 1,000 vent days.
 
Sentara Obici Hospital's Change to Tobacco-Free Covered
 An article in The Suffolk News Herald on June 24, 2008, announced to the community that in order to coincide with its mission of “improving health every day,” Sentara Obici Hospital would become a tobacco free environment as of July 4, 2008. Read the article.  
 
Television Coverage for Sentara School of Health Professions
A June 5, 2008, segment on WVEC-TV Channel-13 News Daybreak reported on the Sentara School of Health Professions graduation ceremony and followed the success of Surgical Technology Graduate Megan Waters, a former Ford Plant employee in pursuit of a second career in healthcare. Read more about her story in Network.

Patient-Centered Care Praised by Media
Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital employee Stan Levinson, manager of Safety and Security, was featured in a June 5, 2008, post on The Virginian-Pilot Web site and interviewed by WTKR-TV News Channel 3 for a heartfelt gesture he made to a family member of a patient.

Levinson connected with the father of a patient who died at the hospital following a motor vehicle accident. The father was mistakenly arrested while trying to cash his son’s Navy death benefit check. As a show of sympathy and support, Levinson framed the American flag that flew in front of the hospital during the patient’s stay and sent it to the grieving father in Texas.

History of Norfolk Featured

Sentara Nightingale Praised
A news story on WTKR-TV Channel 3 about the safety of air ambulances noted that Sentara Nightingale Air Ambulance has been incident-free since its inception in February 1982.

Sentara Obici Hospital Award Featured
An article appeared in the Suffolk News Herald on May 30, 2008, to highlight Sentara Obici Hospital’s receipt of a Compassionate Employer Award, given annually by The Compassionate Friends, a support group for people who have lost a child of any age, by any cause. The hospital was nominated for the award by an employee who lost her son in a car accident and received an overwhelming display of support from her coworkers in the Sentara Obici family. Sentara BelleHarbour Debut Covered in Local News
The late May opening of Sentara BelleHarbour in Suffolk was widely covered by Hampton Roads news media with articles running in The Daily Press, The Suffolk News Herald, The Virginian-Pilot business section and The Sun, The Virginian-Pilot’s community news tabloid for Suffolk. The City of Suffolk Municipal Channel 8 aired a taped program entitled "On the Scene" that provided an overview of services offered at Sentara BelleHarbour with commentary from several Sentara staff.  The Daily Press Reports on Sentara’s New Vascular Treatment Center
The opening of the new Sentara Advanced Vascular Treatment Center at Port Warwick was the topic of a May 21, 2008, Daily Press article entitled “New Facility Targets Vascular Health.” The facility is a one-stop shop specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of vascular diseases and conditions including spider and varicose veins, vein access for dialysis or chemotherapy and severe leg pain.

The article noted that the center specializes in minimally invasive treatment and alternatives to surgery resulting in shorter recovery times and prolonged quality of life. Read a news release about the facility.
