‘Amber Alert’ Baby Recovered at Sentara Leigh Hospital
In mid-December, 2007, two radiology employees at Sentara Leigh Hospital, Sue Midgett and Lisa Ahlbrandt, heard an Amber Alert for an abducted child on the radio and realized they had just performed a procedure on a woman who fit the suspect’s description and had an infant with her. They hurried back to the Emergency Department, where Midgett asked to hold the baby and identified clothing described in the Amber Alert, while Ahlbrandt alerted nursing staff and police were called.

The breaking news story was covered by all three local Hampton Roads television stations, The Virginian Pilot and 94.9 The Point, the radio station that carried the Amber Alert. During media interviews, both employees emphasized the importance of Sentara’s BBEs (Behavior Based Expectations), including Attention to Detail, Questioning Attitude and Being a Wingman. The article was also featured in an industry publication, Advance for Imaging and Radiation Therapy Professionals.

Sentara Vice President Named Commissioner of Health for Virginia
Dr Karen Remley, MD, MBA, FAAP, Vice President of Medical Affairs at Sentara Leigh Hospital, was appointed by Governor Timothy M. Kaine to lead the Department of Health in Richmond, VA. Beginning on January 15, the day of the announcement, the story was covered extensively in print, television, radio and online media including: The Virginian-Pilot, The Daily Press, WAVY-TV 10, WVEC-TV 13, WTKR-TV 3, as well as various online news agencies in Richmond and around the state.

Sentara Featured in Modern Healthcare Magazine
Sentara’s Chief Financial Officer Rob Broermann was interviewed for an article about the rise in Medicare spending in 2006. The article appeared in the January 14 issue of Modern Healthcare.

New Sentara Center for Health and Fitness Makes News
Sentara Center for Health and Fitness, the new 34,000 square-foot health facility which opened in January across from Sentara CarePlex Hospital, was featured in the January issue of Hampton Roads Health Journal. (Read the article on page 5.)

Women’s Imaging Pavilion at Sentara Williamsburg Featured
The Women’s Imaging Pavilion located inside The Vernon M. Geddy, Jr. Outpatient Center at Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center was featured in the January 2008 Williamsburg edition of Hampton Roads Health Journal in an article entitled, “The Age of Digital Detection: Sentara Women’s Imaging Pavilion to Offer Digital Mammography.” The article indicated that Women’s Imaging Pavilion staff was anticipating the arrival of three digital mammography units in January 2008 to replace film-based units.

Sentara Obici Hospital Featured in Business Section
An article entitled Sentara and Obici: It's a Healthy Relationship was published in The Virginian Pilot on December 26, 2007. The article discussed benefits of the 2005 merger between Sentara and Obici Hospital, which had been an independent community hospital for decades.
