| Camp Lighthouse participants and staff practice the team walk. | Camp Lighthouse Offers Hope to Grieving Children More than 50 children and 20 adults attended the Second Annual Camp Lighthouse to aid grieving children at Triple ‘R’ Ranch in Chesapeake, April 21 and 22. Sponsored by Sentara Home Care Services’ Hospice Program, the two-day camp offered a mix of fun activities for children ages 6-16 who have experienced the death of a close family member or friend within the past two years. The fun of camp mixed with counselor-guided sessions help the children understand their grief through discussion, art therapy and other creative activities. Camp Lighthouse is made possible by contributions from individual community supporters.
Sentara CarePlex Hospital Receives Komen Foundation Grant The cancer care team at Sentara CarePlex Hospital was awarded a $15,000 grant from the local chapter of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation for the 2007-2008 calendar year. The grant, titled “Temporary Aid for Breast Cancer Patients in Treatment,” will provide for up to 30 low-income breast cancer patients currently in treatment or within 12 months of active treatment. Financial assistance will be provided for expenses such as lymphedema supplies and treatment, health insurance premiums, rent/mortgage payments, groceries, automobile payments, and household utilities. Low income women tend not to be diagnosed until they show symptoms and the disease is advanced, which affects the course and cost of treatment, as well as patients’ survival rates. The Sentara Health Foundation will approve and disburse the grant funds.
Sentara Participates in America’s First Region Campaign Sentara is a proud supporter of America’s First Region, a branding effort spearheaded by the Hampton Roads Partnership, to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the English settlers’ first landing on the coast of Virginia Beach, and their founding of Jamestown Settlement just three weeks later. Sentara features the America’s First Region logo on our website and has shared in the purchase of four billboards to help mark the occasion for Hampton Roads residents and tourists.
