Network Asks Employees How Do You Improve Health Every Day?

“I improve health every day by striving to hire well qualified, compassionate staff to join our healthcare team. My goal is to help someone find, not just a job, but a career in which they can learn and grow, while providing excellent care and customer service in whatever role they work in. Obici is the newest hospital to join Sentara and I am proud to be a part of this new team. Being one of the few recruiters to work on site at the hospital, I have the unique opportunity to work hand in hand with the management team and pride myself on having an open door policy. Presently, I recruit for the whole hospital…all types of positions…nurse anesthetists, radiology technicians, pharmacists, food service workers, RN's and LPN's. I wear many different hats each day and I enjoy every minute of it. I have a background in nursing, and I am able to use those experiences when talking with potential applicants about a career in healthcare. I always tell them there is just nothing else like it.”

“As a recruiter I improve health every day by attempting to identify highly qualified RNs and LPNs who fit well with Sentara’s mission and vision. I look for individuals who are ready to take that next step in their career. I consider their drive for work, and where they see themselves in 5, 10, 15 years. I ask them what their view of healthcare is and what role they feel RNs and LPNs should be playing in healthcare in the future. Sentara is looking for candidates who have a goal of bettering themselves both academically and professionally. With nursing there’s a lot of continuing education to keep up with and Sentara encourages its employees to take advantage of tuition assistance and the opportunity for advancement.”

“I improve health every day by finding highly qualified candidates with the nursing skills we need. I love recruitment. We work as a team – no one stands alone – it takes a lot of teamwork to bring in qualified applicants. There are so many things to consider — a person’s work background, education, licensure, references. As soon as we receive an application online, we screen it and then we call the applicant —often the very same day. In the phone interview, I like to hear a candidate talk about his or her passion for nursing or interest for work on a particular unit. It helps us since the next step is to schedule a face-to-face interview with the hiring manager. We get many applicants who live outside the area and who find us just by surfing the net. Candidates are pretty web savvy these days. They know how to use the internet to research and find jobs. It is fast, economical and convenient. In fact, I recently worked with Emily Trawick and Crissy August, two nurses who now work at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital. They lived out of state and found Sentara through the internet. I was thrilled to work with them and finally meet them in person, because so often by the time candidates are hired, I feel I know them just from our time on the phone.”
