Pancreas Transplant at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital The renal transplant team at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital performed the region’s first simultaneous kidney and pancreas transplant overnight between August 26 and 27, 2007. The transplant recipient, now age 39, had suffered Type I Diabetes, including frequent blood sugar tests, insulin shots and dialysis, since age 5. He is doing well, and is recovering at home, free of insulin and with improved quality of life. Read more about the pancreas transplant patient.

| Lap-Band®: Minimally Invasive Weight-Loss Surgery will be presented live online on October 11 at noon | ExploreHealth Live Surgery Webcasts Update ExploreHealth with Sentara was the first in Hampton Roads to bring live surgery webcasts to consumers and healthcare professionals around the world. Using the web for live broadcasts from Sentara facilities, the webcasts highlight innovative surgical procedures being done by Sentara physicians and staff. Since their debut, over 9,000 people have watched the first two webcasts ― Minimally Invasive Procedures for Improving Circulation to the Legs and da Vinci™ Robotic-Assisted Prostatectomy. In addition, almost 25,000 have visited the webcast online pages.
Two more webcasts are planned: October 11 at noon on Lap-Band®: Minimally Invasive Weight-Loss Surgery, and a November webcast, on Minimally Invasive Lobectomy for Lung Cancer. Find out more about the live surgery webcasts.
Hyperbaric Head and Neck Cancer Trial Sentara Norfolk General Hospital is one of three sites in the country participating in a Phase 1 Clinical Trial using hyperbaric oxygenation immediately prior to chemotherapy and radiation to treat head and neck cancers. Sentara Norfolk General Hospital now has a hyperbaric oxygen chamber for this trial. The trial is testing the question of whether oxygenated cancer cells are killed more effectively than non-oxygenated cells. The trial should last a year and can accommodate up to 18 patients. Sentara Bayside Sleep Disorders Center Expands Sentara Bayside Hospital Sleep Disorders Center added two sleep study rooms and a board certified sleep specialist, Dr. Fletcher Pierce, to increase service to area patients suffering from sleep disorders. The expanded sleep laboratory, now with six beds instead of four, increases study capacity by 50 percent and offers 575 additional patients each year a speedier diagnosis and treatment.
