Since its inception in 1981, Nightingale has flown over 15,000 patient care missions within its regional area with a focus on safety, teamwork, professionalism and excellence in trauma care delivery. | (L-R) Sentara employees Jennifer Korb, Angel Vill and Robert Brantley at the Opportunity House in Portsmouth | United Way Day of Caring Approximately 200 Sentara employees painted, cleared trash, pruned shrubs, helped with school physicals, library work and more during the annual United Way Day of Caring 2007. The event was held September 7 for the United Way of South Hampton Roads and the United Way of the Virginia Peninsula (Lower Peninsula), and September 13 for the United Way of Greater Williamsburg. Sentara crews assisted at numerous United Way sites in Chesapeake, Hampton, Norfolk, Suffolk, Virginia Beach and Williamsburg. Thanks to those of you who demonstrated Sentara's active involvement in our community!
College Access Program Update This fall 16 Sentara employees and 3 of their children are taking advantage of Sentara College Access Program, a supplemental education-funding program for employees and their families. Eligible students must be accepted or enrolled in a program for: Registered Nurse, Pharmacist, Licensed Practical Nurse, Radiology Tech (X-Ray and Ultrasound only) or Physical Therapy. Applications for the program are accepted twice annually. The next application period is October 15 - November 15, 2007. Informational sessions are being held in October at various Sentara sites. Nursing Scholarships Awarded For the past four years, Sentara has offered a Local RN Scholarship to eligible students accepted into a Registered Nursing program at one of seven RN schools in the Hampton Roads area. To date, Sentara has committed $1,125,000 to 112 recipients of which over $774,000 has been paid out to cover their books, tuition and fees at various schools. Application deadlines are June 1 and October 1 each year. Interested applicants can find the details on sentara.com under the New Graduate RNs/Student Nurses link.
 eCare Implementation Update eCare will transform the way Sentara provides care for patients by establishing an electronic medical record (EMR) system, allowing staff and physicians to work in a nearly paperless environment, automating many manual processes, and eliminating the need to interpret written orders. eCare software was launched in the Emergency Departments of Sentara CarePlex Hospital, Port Warwick, Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center and Sentara Leigh Hospital. Inpatient training begins in October for Sentara Leigh Hospital employees, preparing them for their January 2008 launch of Epic software and electronic medical record (EMR). Benefits Open Enrollment The annual open enrollment for employee benefit choices begins November 1 and runs through November 30. This mandatory enrollment means all employees must enroll in order to have all of the benefits they will need for January 1, 2008. Introducing Mission: Health Program Sentara employees who elect medical coverage for 2008 can participate in Mission: Health, a new wellness and disease management program to encourage and reward healthy lifestyle choices. Sentara employees can lower the amount they spend on their medical plan coverage through Sentara, earn incentives in following established treatments to diabetes and cardiovascular disease, participate in wellness programs through Healthy Edge, and most of all, benefit by becoming healthier individuals.
