| (L-R) Gloria Bailey, Maureen Longbottom and Lee Martin at the August 23 screening | Sentara Bayside Hospital Offers Heart Screenings Employees, physicians and volunteers at Sentara Bayside Hospital participated in a series of heart screenings held at the hospital in August to help community members check their heart health. At each event, participants received four heart screenings, including a complete EKG, heart risk evaluation and counseling, cholesterol and blood pressure check. Results were provided in a pocket-sized card. More than 50 people participated in the screenings.

| City of Virginia Beach Mayor Meyera Oberndorf and Sentara CEO Dave Bernd | Sentara Princess Anne Marks First Year More than 2,000 people attended a community celebration at Sentara Princess Anne on September 15. Live music, free health screenings, chair massage, emergency vehicle tours, rock climbing, children’s activities, and a chance to meet the physicians located on the campus were a few of the activities featured. Since the freestanding Emergency Department opened one year ago, it has treated over 30,000 patients. The Outpatient Surgery Center and Advanced Imaging Center, along with emergency services, lab, pharmacy and a variety of physician specialists have brought technology, convenience and comprehensive health care services to residents of southern Virginia Beach. | Simona Parvulescu-Codrea | Sentara CarePlex Technician Recognized by Cleveland Clinic Simona Parvulescu-Codrea, monitor technician, Telemetry Monitor Surveillance Department of Sentara CarePlex Hospital, was one of five people nominated to receive the Young Investigator Research Award from Cleveland Clinic’s Bakken Heart-Brain Institute. Simona extends her gratitude to a dedicated research team including fellow CarePlex employees Leone Vigil, Twila Lipscomb, Andrea Samuel and Victoria Green, Dr. Patricia A. Nahormek of Tidewater Heart Specialists, Inc. in Hampton, VA, and Professor Gregory Cascino, Department of Neurology and Chair of the Division of Epilepsy, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN. The nomination award came as the result of a scientific work presented as a poster during the Heart-Brain Association’s annual meeting. The work describes a cardiac abnormality triggered by epileptic seizures, a condition which was not yet described in existing Epilepsy literature.

| (L-R): Barbara Bates, Connie Wakefield and Genemarie McGee | Sentara Leigh Hospital Nurse Earns National Award Connie Wakefield, RN, 2A, Orthopedics at Sentara Leigh Hospital earned national recognition and was inducted as a gold member into the Cambridge Who’s Who for Outstanding Achievement and Service in the Nursing Profession. The award was prompted by her recent certification as an Orthopedic Nurse Certified. After 10 months of study and preparation, Wakefield passed the exam on the first try with a score of 107.

| Mary Blunt has been named administrator of Sentara Norfolk General Hospital | Sentara Norfolk General Hospital Administrator Named Mary Blunt, president of Sentara Life Care since 1999, has been named administrator of Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. Previously, Blunt presided over seven nursing centers and three assisted living centers as well as Sentara’s PACE and Senior Day Care programs and the Sentara Rehabilitation Network. She is a Fellow of the American College of Hospital Executives (ACHE) and is a member of the American Hospital Association Board of Trustees. Learn more.
Sentara Nursing Center Employee Receives Scholarship Teonnie Urbana Anderson, Certified Nursing Assistant at Sentara Nursing Center – Chesapeake, received a $1500 scholarship from the Commonwealth Long Term Care Foundation’s Regirer Nurse Scholarship Program. The award, offered through the Virginia Health Care Association, will enable her to pursue a degree in Registered Nursing.

| (L-R) Adrian Holliman and Eddie Gutshall | Bedside Safety Check Coming to Sentara Obici Hospital Over a year ago, 24 staff members from Sentara Obici Hospital formed a steering committee to evaluate technology usage to enhance patient safety. As a result, the Electronic Medication Administration Record and Bedside Medication Verification (EMAR/BMV) process will go live at Sentara Obici Hospital in November 2007, providing a BAR coded, supported verification at the point where the patient receives the medication. The EMAR/BMV will be an important safety check for both staff and patient, and has proven to prevent medication errors at hospitals across the nation.

| Members of the Family Advisory Council | Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital Wins Planetree Award Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital’s Patient and Family Advisory Council received an International Planetree Award for the family, friends and social support component. The award was presented at the Planetree annual conference in Williamsburg in October. The council is made of former patients and family members who serve on 17 hospital and system committees. They played a vital role in the redesign of the Emergency Department and provided feedback to the system on diverse topics such as consent forms, eCare, patient education videos for the GetWell Network and the Personal Health Book.
Sentara Hosts Planetree Conference Sentara hosted the Planetree Annual Conference October 2-5, 2007 for more than 700 participants at Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center. Planetree is a non-profit organization that promotes a patient-centered approach to health care delivery. This affiliate network of care providers believes in treating the physical, mental and spiritual needs of patients and their loved ones. Sentara has three Planetree hospitals in the system – Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center, Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital, and Sentara Obici Hospital. In addition to touring conference attendees through our Planetree hospitals, Sentara staff led many of the conference seminars. Presentations ranged from developing a Patient and Family Advisory Council; facility design and construction; launching a Concierge Service; and developing a comprehensive art program within a hospital. Sentara is proud of our patient-centered journey and pleased to have hosted health care providers from across the country and around the world who share in our philosophy.
Optima Health Medicare Advantage Plan This fall Optima Health is introducing Medicare Advantage Plans during the Medicare Annual Enrollment period, November 15 through December 31, 2007.
