A Message to Employees from Dave Bernd, CEO, Sentara Healthcare

This issue of Network highlights Optima Health, our award-winning,*not-for-profit health plan that is committed to improving community wellness for the 345,000 members it serves in Virginia.

Since 1984, Optima has been growing strong. Today, Optima has healthcare plans for large and small employer groups. Optima’s commercial plans will be offered statewide by year’s end 2008. Optima’s Medicare Advantage plans now serve retirees in Hampton Roads, Richmond, Fredericksburg, King George, Stafford and Spotsylvania counties and Optima Family Care, a Medicaid HMO, operates in almost all parts of the state. Individual coverage and consumer-directed health plans will be statewide in early 2008.

What makes Optima Health a standout?
It is an integrated health plan. It has disease management programs for medical and behavioral health that offer patient action plans developed with clinical quality data. And, Optima places a strong emphasis on preventive care services to keep members healthy, detect diseases at an early stage and help members avoid illness.

Optima’s success is everywhere – from innovative disease management programs on diabetes, pregnancy, asthma and congestive heart failure – to Optima Family Care, one of the largest Medicaid managed care health plans in Virginia, boasting 125,000 members.

Read this issue of Network and learn how Optima’s award-winning disease management programs have helped members. Also, find out how an innovative program like Optima Family Care Girl’s Community Basketball Program has touched the lives of more than 10,000 participants in Virginia.

I’d like to thank and recognize the hard work of all the employees who make Optima Health programs award-worthy. We appreciate your dedication to our mission to improve health every day.
