| Windermere - the apartment building is one of the latest gifts to the Sentara Health Foundation. | Apartment Building Donated to Foundation An 80-year-old, three-story brick apartment building called Windermere, located in Norfolk’s historic Ghent neighborhood, is one of the latest gifts to the Sentara Health Foundation. The donor, James D. Finley, now 94, and his late wife, Frances Johnson Finley, lived in one of the building’s six units for many years. He gave the building to Sentara to honor his wife’s memory and two of his in-laws, and to help Sentara advance its mission. The newly named Johnson-Finley Center will be a great place for medical students, nurses and administrative residents to call home. Read more about this donation to the Sentara Health Foundation.
Retiree Connect Program Gains Momentum Sentara Healthcare retirees are eligible to serve on a steering committee for Retiree Connect, a program that reconnects retirees with Sentara. Retirees interested in serving may call Meril Amdursky at 757-455-7233. The committee’s goals include improving communication with retirees through a newsletter, planning two social events a year and developing a retirement planning handbook for employees. The group has developed a charitable giving society called the Sentara Legacy Society. Sentara retirees are also eligible to obtain an ID card so they may continue to enjoy Sentara employee discounts upon retirement. To register for the program, contact Tamara Mears at 757-455-7150.
Employee HOPE Fund Growing Strong Since it was founded in 2003 following Hurricane Isabel, Sentara’s Helping to Overcome Personal Emergency Fund or HOPE Fund has awarded $178,000 to assist employees who experience catastrophic, financial loss or hardship through no fault of their own. Losses may include fire, death in the family, flooding, hurricane, tornado or serious personal family illness. Sentara employees take care of their own by contributing to the fund through either cash donations or payroll deduction. Employees can learn more about the Hope Fund on WaveNet.
Community Benefit Report A Sentara community benefit report focusing on primary care access for uninsured and underserved populations appeared in the September 25, 2007 issue of The Virginian-Pilot. As a not-for-profit health system, it is important that Sentara issue these regular reports highlighting the dedication of our employees, physicians and volunteers to improve the health of the region.
