Sentara Receives $500,000 Endowment from CBN

Funding for Original Cardiac Research in Hampton Roads

Norfolk, VA – November 8, 2006 – The Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN) pledged $500,000 to establish the CBN Research Endowment at Sentara Cardiovascular Research Institute.
“CBN has truly invested in the health of Hampton Roads. This generous gift will provide financial resources for Sentara doctors to conduct leading cardiac research in this community for years to come,” says David L. Bernd, Sentara chief executive officer.
“Sentara and CBN share similar visions for quality and excellence,” says CBN founder Dr. Pat Robertson. “What better way to improve the health of area residents than to help fund research by doctors who are nationally recognized leaders in heart care.”
Proceeds from endowment investments will be used to fund cardiac studies at Sentara, primarily original studies focused on Hampton Roads cardiac care.
“Generosity such as this allows us to explore original ideas here in Hampton Roads,” says cardiologist Dr. John M. Herre, co scientific director of Sentara Cardiovascular Research Institute.
Established in 2005, Sentara Cardiovascular Research Institute strengthened the already vibrant cardiovascular research program in place at Sentara for more than 15 years. Providing the latest treatment options, Sentara doctors study a wide array of treatments involving conditions such as congestive heart failure, coronary artery disease, arrhythmia, heart valve disease, and artery blockage. Since it’s inception, research projects have increased more than 40% and the institute has developed collaborative relationships locally, regionally, and nationally .
