Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center Opens August 17

Easier Access to High-quality Medical Care for Greater Williamsburg Area

Williamsburg, Va.-August 9, 2006 – The new $96.4 million, 5-story Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center opens off Mooretown Road in York County, replacing Williamsburg Community Hospital built in 1961. The new regional medical center offers increased privacy and patient-centered care with larger all private rooms, expanded Emergency, Surgery and Maternity Departments; and advanced diagnostic imaging capabilities.
Williamsburg Community Hospital’s Emergency Department closes to all patients Thursday, August 17 at 5:00 a.m. Patients seeking emergency care beginning at 5:00 a.m. August 17 should go directly to the new medical center near Route 199 off Mooretown Road.
Ambulances from 10 Virginia jurisdictions, Sentara, and the Air Force begin transporting an estimated 80 patients at 6:00 a.m. from the old hospital to the new medical campus.
Located off Interstate 64 from exit 234, the new medical center is positioned on a 120-acre campus in a growth corridor of York County providing the region’s residents and tourists easier access to quality health care services.
“Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center is ideally located with room to expand and the flexibility necessary to meet future health care needs of this growing region,” says David L. Bernd, Sentara’s chief executive officer.
The new center adjoins the existing 97,000 s.f. Geddy Outpatient Center constructed on the campus in 2003 at an investment of $23.4 million.
Designed with patients and families in mind, the new center offers some of the latest technology combined with amenities such as warm, comfortable furnishings and lots of natural lighting.

The new medical center provides the region expanded cardiac and vascular services with a full time, dedicated cardiac catheterization laboratory and a dedicated special procedures room for interventional radiology and vascular procedures, speeding care when heart patients need it most.
Built to accept future technologies, today the medical center opens with a high-speed fiber optic network for quick transfer of filmless images either across the new campus or across the region to speed diagnosis.
Other features include “smart” operating rooms—equipment that literally listens and responds to doctors orders and eICU ®, an electronic intensive care monitoring system pioneered by Sentara in 2000.
Disaster planning figured into hospital features such as a negative pressure isolation area in the emergency department, exterior decontamination canopy, and the building and windows rated for hurricane winds up to 110 miles per hour, as well as the hospital’s placement on some of the highest ground in York County.
