Heart, Urology Programs at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in U.S. News & World Report "Top 50" for 2006

Norfolk, VA – July 7, 2006 – The Heart and Urology programs at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital are once again among the nation’s best, according to U.S. News & World Report. In the U.S. News annual rankings of the nation’s best hospitals, Sentara Heart Hospital and cardiac surgery program at Sentara Norfolk General ranked 27th among 176 hospitals listed. The Urology program at Sentara Norfolk General, ranked 47th, is the only urology program in Virginia to make the Top 50 this year.
Mortality ratios for cardiac patients at Sentara Norfolk General were better than seven of the top ten programs listed, including those of Columbia-Presbyterian, Duke University Medical Center, Mayo Clinic and Johns Hopkins.
Mortality ratios for Urology patients at Sentara Norfolk General were better than five of the top ten programs listed, including Columbia-Presbyterian, Duke, Memorial Sloan-Kettering and Massachusetts General Hospital.
“We’re proud of the fact that the quality of our heart and urology programs is among the best in the nation,” says Gary Yates, M.D., chief medical officer for Sentara Healthcare. “Though some of the higher-ranked programs have greater name recognition than Sentara, which factors into their scores, our ranking was driven mainly by clinical measures, including one of the lowest mortality ratios on the list.”
Sentara offers unique heart facility, programs
The Sentara Heart Hospital, opened in 2006, is a bricks-and-mortar statement about Sentara’s commitment to cardiac care. It features 112 private inpatient beds and 45 pre/post-op procedure rooms dedicated to heart care on the campus of Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
The Sentara Cardiovascular Research Institute, established in 2005, coordinates cardiac studies and trials at Sentara Heart Hospital.
The Sentara Heart Center in the West Wing at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital offers 48 private beds dedicated to cardiac care.
Urology program at Sentara Norfolk General excels, teaches
Urology procedures restore urinary functions that directly affect a patient’s comfort and quality of life. Urology procedures remove tumors, reduce enlarged prostates, repair traumatic injuries and correct deformities of the renal and urinary systems.
The Urology program at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital employs the daVinci™ surgical robot. Minimally invasive prostate and bladder procedures using daVinci™ mean greater post-operative comfort for patients and quicker recovery times.
Sentara Norfolk General is also a training site for surgeons who want to use daVinci™ for prostate cancer procedures.
