Sentara Norfolk General Hospital Administrator Accepts Position in Texas

Bruce Holstien To Become President and CEO of CHRISTUS Spohn Health System

Norfolk, VA – July 5, 2007— Howard P. Kern, Sentara president and chief operating officer announced that Sentara accepted the resignation of Bruce Holstien, senior vice president and administrator of Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. Holstien accepted the position of president and chief operating officer of CHRISTUS Spohn Health System in Corpus Christi, Texas, where he will assume responsibilities late August.
Holstien has been with Sentara for eight years. He joined Sentara in 1999 as vice president of physician and network relations at Optima Health. During his time with the health plan, his leadership roles included senior vice president of administration and chief operating officer at Optima Health.
In January 2005, Holstien was named senior vice president and administrator of Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. During his tenure, the region’s only dedicated heart hospital, Sentara Heart Hospital, opened on the Norfolk General campus. Numerous other initiatives have been undertaken including the expansion of the emergency department, which is currently in progress. Holstien has also provided leadership for a portfolio of services including laboratory, pharmacy, anesthesia, cardiology, gastroenterology, urology and radiology.
“We will have important shoes to fill with Bruce’s departure. He has served in numerous leadership positions throughout the organization,” said Kern.
“He joined Sentara at a time of tremendous growth for our organization and has helped strengthen physician relations and management. I know he will bring great leadership to CHRISTUS Spohn Health System,” Kern said.
Kern will assume Holstien’s responsibilities in the interim.
