Virginia Beach, VA – August 27, 2007 – Sentara Behavioral Health Services will hold its next Continuing Medical Education conference on Friday, September 21, from 8:30 a.m. – noon. The focus of the event is “Mental Health Public Policy, Violence and Access to Treatment: Will the Virginia Tech Tragedy Change Anything?” The event will be held at the Richmond Marriott, 500 East Broad Street, Richmond, Va. and is open to Sentara Behavioral Health Services network practitioners who are preregistered.
James S. Reinhard, M.D., Commissioner of the Virginia Department of Mental Health, Mental Retardation and Substance Abuse Services will be the conference speaker and will provide participants with a broad understanding of the Department of Mental Health, Mental Retardation and Substance Abuse Services’ Transformation of Care Initiative as well as the impact within mental health of the recent events at Virginia Tech.
“It's critical to make sure that people with mental illness get the services they need," said Matthew Keats, M.D., senior medical director of Sentara Behavioral Health Services and course director and moderator. “The Virginia Tech tragedy has placed a rare spotlight on mental health issues. The Commissioner will discuss what’s happening at the state level to address the needs of the mentally ill now and into the future,” Keats said.
