Kidney Services at Sentara Norfolk General Make Top 50 in U.S. News & World Report Survey of "America's Best Hospitals"

 Norfolk, VA – July 13, 2007 – For the first time, Kidney services at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital made the Top 50 in U.S. News & World Report magazine’s annual survey of ‘America’s Best Hospitals.’ The survey of 5,462 hospitals ranked just 173 in 16 specialties.
Under the specialty heading of Kidney, Sentara Norfolk General ranked 50th. However, Sentara Norfolk General’s mortality index is superior to seven of the top ten programs in the nation.
The criteria used in evaluating programs include treatment of kidney disease, access to renal dialysis, kidney failure and infections in the hospital setting as well as the presence of renal transplant programs, which is a specialty Sentara Norfolk General.
Sentara kidney transplant program busiest in Virginia in 2006
The kidney transplant program at Sentara Norfolk General was the busiest in Virginia last year, with 110 procedures performed at Norfolk General and four pediatric cases at neighboring Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters, for a total of 114. In pediatric living donor cases, donor procedures are performed at Norfolk General while recipients receive their organs at CHKD.
The Norfolk General program received 65 deceased donor kidneys during 2006 and 45 living donors. Two of those living donor kidneys were non-directed, meaning they were made available to any patient with a match.
Pancreas transplant patients now listed
Sentara Norfolk General Hospital is also listing patients for its new Pancreas transplant program, though no procedures have yet been performed. Pancreas transplants done in conjunction with kidney transplants can cure Type-1 diabetes that often leads to renal failure and the need for kidney transplantation.
