Committees – CISM Team, Sentara Hospitals-Norfolk Ethics Committee, Bereavement Team, Coordinator Early in his career, Chaplain Hoy felt a call to ministry and began graduate education for ministry in 1991. He served as a church pastor for several years before sensing a call to specialized ministry in the hospital. Chaplain Hoy has been with Sentara since August of 2000.
James received his Bachelor of Science from Presbyterian College and his Masters of Divinity at the Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond, which included study at Union Theological and Presbyterian School of Christian Education. He did his Chaplaincy internship in Clinical Pastoral Education at the Medical College of Virginia Hospital and his residency at the University of Virginia Medical Center. While serving at Sentara, he completed his clinical ethics training at the University of Virginia, Center for Biomedical Ethics.
James is endorsed by the Presbyterian Church (USA) and is a member of the Presbytery of Eastern Virginia. Currently, he is a candidate for Board Certified Chaplain in the Association of Professional Chaplains.
James is active in a local church where he serves on a contemporary worship team.
