Accreditation Statement
The majority of programs in the Sentara Cancer Network are accredited or are actively seeking accreditation by the American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer. This designation is only awarded to those facilities in the country recognized as offering the best in cancer care.
Established by the American College of Surgeons in 1932, the Approvals Program sets standards for cancer programs and reviews the programs to ensure they conform to those principles. Recognizing that cancer is a complex group of diseases, the program promotes consultation among surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, diagnostic radiologists, pathologists and other cancer specialists of the highest caliber working together. Such multidisciplinary cooperation results in improved patient care. Slightly more than one-fifth of U.S. hospitals have approved cancer programs, and more than 80 percent of newly diagnosed cancer patients are treated in those facilities.
