Colorectal Cancer Program
The hospital’s multi-disciplinary team approach includes one of the region’s few fellowship-trained colorectal surgeons, state-of-the-art technology and a commitment to innovating care. Patients also have access to program coordinators who can answer questions throughout the treatment process and direct them to needed resources. Sentara CarePlex Hospital also hosts a monthly support group for people with colorectal cancer or two of the most common non-cancerous conditions, Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.

Colonoscopy, or routine screening of the large intestine for polyps and precancerous growths, is just one of a gamut of diagnostic procedures offered at the hospital. The American Cancer Society now recommends that everyone schedule a colonoscopy after age 50, or earlier if they have a risk factor such as a family history of colon cancer.

Drawing on a wide range of tools and expertise, specialists at Sentara CarePlex Hospital are often able to diagnose cancer and other digestive conditions early. This gives patients faster access to the growing number of treatments for digestive disorders, many of which cause fewer long-term side effects than in the past.
