Advanced Imaging at Sentara: Mammography

Mammography is a special type of low-dose X-ray of the breasts that is used to diagnose breast cancer. The resulting picture, called Mammograms, can often show tumors up to two years before they can be felt.

Mammography is considered an invaluable tool against the second most deadly type of cancer in women. One in eight women get breast cancer during their lives, age being one of the primary risks. About 78 percent of women with invasive breast cancer are age 50 or older when they are diagnosed, and 17 percent are in their 40s.

Genetics are also a factor, so those women with family members who have had breast or ovarian cancer should be especially diligent with their tests. Breast cancer is most treatable if it is found early.

Mammograms are recommended every year for women older than 40, younger women with symptoms of breast cancer, or those with a high risk for the disease.
