Advanced Imaging at Sentara: Ultrasound
Ultrasound is a method of imaging that uses high-frequency sound waves to produce precise images of organs and structures inside the body. Most associate ultrasound images with pregnancy and viewing a developing fetus, but there are many other uses for ultrasound technology in all areas of medicine.
Physicians use ultrasound images to see the heart, blood vessels, liver, gallbladder and other organs. No radiation is used during the procedure, making it an extremely safe way of getting precise images of internal organs. Using high frequency sound waves—higher than the human ear can detect—an ultrasound sends waves into the body using a hand-held device called a transducer. After the waves bounce off tissues, they are picked back up by the transducer and a computer processes the information to produce an image. These images provide important information that can help a physician diagnose and treat disease.
Ultrasound may be used to diagnose gallbladder disease, evaluate flow in blood vessels, check the biopsy and treatment of a tumor, study the heart, diagnose some forms of infection, diagnose some forms of cancer and reveal abnormalities in the scrotum and prostate, among other things.
