Flight Paramedic

Current Virginia and Nationally Registered EMT - Paramedic Certification
Five years of active experience at the Paramedic level
Certifications in BCLS, ACLS and PALS

Flight Nurse

Current Virginia Registered Nurse License
Five years of critical care experience (ICU, CCU, NICU, CVT, ED, etc.)
Certifications in BCLS, ACLS, PALS, CCRN, CEN or CFRN and Virginia EMT (within one year of hire)

Pilot

2000 hour minimum flight time (contracted through Omniflight)
Commercial license with instrument rating 
Operates under strict FAA guidelines

The Flight Nurse/Paramedic receives three days of classes covering aviation topics when hired into the Nightingale Regional Air Ambulance Program including: aviation physiology, aerodynamics, communication, safely/emergency operations, survival, navigation, FAA regulations and aircraft operation. Depending on full or part-time status, their orientation to the program can last six to ten weeks.

The crew operates under the Tidewater Emergency Medical Services (TEMS) Regional Medical protocols and specialized protocols developed by the program's Medical Director. Annual competency training is done in several ALS procedures, such as: airway management with the use of paralytic agents, chest decompression, cricothyrotomy, intraosseous insertion, pericardiocentesis, use of external pacemaker and capnometry.

The flight crew works under the direction of the attending physician based in the Emergency Department at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital for online medical control.
