Region and Population Served Sentara services residents of Virginia and North Carolina, with a primary focus on the more than two million residents in southeastern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina. The population is roughly 50% male, 50% female, with over one third of the population represented by people 65 and over.
Large Patient Base The physician practices of Sentara Healthcare offer close to 250 of the area’s leading primary care and specialist physicians. Sentara Medical Group, with over 200 physicians. Sentara Medical Group practices include:
- Internal medicine and family practice appointed care
- Urgent care
- Blended practices of urgent and appointed care
- Occupational medicine
- Specialty care such as, pediatrics, infectious disease, inpatient rounding teams, pulmonary and critical care, sports medicine, pain management, endocrinology and rheumatology.
Together, they provide access to a patient base of over 258,000 patients. State of the art computer systems like LOGITIAN improve patient care through the electronic medical record and advanced care tracking mechanisms. Sentara Health Plans provides health coverage plans to over 330,000 enrollees plus another 200,000 members in joint programs.

Dedicated Clinical Staff Our dedicated clinical staff is experienced in the aspects of clinical trial recruitment and regulatory compliance. The staff observes the highest levels of patient confidentiality while achieving the utmost integrity in clinical trial administration and results reporting.
The Executive Medical Director of Sentara Medical Group services as Clinical Research Medical Director. Based on expertise and interest, specialists are identified to serve as the Principal Investigator for specific areas of research.
The Director of Clinical Research is a registered nurse with 15 years of research experience. She is a Certified Clinical Research Coordinator and has worked for a major pharmaceutical company as a Clinical Research Associate. The Director facilitates the coordination of studies as well as the management of the team of Clinical Research Clinicians/Coordinators. The Coordinators are licensed nurses who are specially trained in all aspects of research protocols, recruiting, patient education and data management.
