Introduction to the Next Generation Surgical Robot at Sentara Norfolk General

Minimally invasive surgery for prostate cancer at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital began in November, 2000, with laparoscopic radical prostatectomy. Since then the Aesop voice-activated robotic camera and the Zeus surgical robot (Computer Motion, Goleta, CA) have been utilized.
In July, 2004, specially trained surgeons at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital began using the region's first da Vinci® surgical robot (Intuitive Surgical, Sunnyvale, CA), a medical breakthrough for the treatment of localized prostate cancer.
In early 2007, surgeons at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital surpassed 500 successful da Vinci® laporscopic prostatectomies. In this web page, we will introduce the history of the program, details of the da Vinci® system, and information for patients and their families.
