Our health providers strive to be on the cutting edge of treatments, and accomplished their goal when they became the first in the area to introduce transanal endoscopic microsurgery. This minimally invasive technique removes certain tumors from the anus without cutting into the abdomen. Colorectal cancer survival rates at Sentara are above the national average, thanks in part to all of these efforts.

Recognizing the importance of early detection
You are in a unique position to help not only yourself but others as well. Once you have decided on how to best care for yourself, let your family and friends know that the Sentara Cancer Network wishes to prevent colorectal cancer, too. We educate the community and encourage early diagnosis with colonoscopies. Most American should be screened at age 50; African Americans at 45; and anyone with a family history, 10 years prior to the age the family member was diagnosed, if it is before the above guidelines.
