Learning that you have colorectal cancer is concerning and confusing for many people.  The term “colorectal” is not well known, but means the large intestine – also referred to as the colon -- and the last few inches of the large intestine – also called the rectum.

Understanding more
The Sentara Cancer Network wants to help you learn about colorectal cancer, how you can treat it and how you can encourage your loved ones to be screened for it.

Reaching out to a team with the right tools
The Sentara Cancer Network takes a team approach, where a handful of experts recommend treatments. They consider all of the options available and closely follow the Commission on Cancer and National Quality Forum care guidelines.

Watch a video about our collaborative approach to care:

Our health providers strive to be on the cutting edge of treatments, and accomplished their goal when they became the first in the area to introduce transanal endoscopic microsurgery. This minimally invasive technique removes certain tumors from the anus without cutting into the abdomen. Colorectal cancer survival rates at Sentara are above the national average, thanks in part to all of these efforts.

Recognizing the importance of early detection
You are in a unique position to help not only yourself but others as well. Once you have decided on how to best care for yourself, let your family and friends know that the Sentara Cancer Network wishes to prevent colorectal cancer, too. We educate the community and encourage early diagnosis with colonoscopies. Most American should be screened at age 50; African Americans at 45; and anyone with a family history, 10 years prior to the age the family member was diagnosed, if it is before the above guidelines.

Somewhere nearby for care
The Sentara Care Network offers patients several locations for treatments across Hampton Roads, making it convenient for you and your family. Wherever your home is located, you will find a care center close to you without having far to travel.

Care that will comfort you
The American Cancer Society presented the Hospital Patient Services Award to the Sentara Cancer Network for outstanding support to core programs. Several of our facilities have won awards for exemplary patient services and support.

These awards mean our patients can be sure that the staff goes above and beyond to anticipate and meet their needs.
