For more information on nutrition during cancer treatment, including recipes, see the Eating Hints book from the National Cancer Institute.
Nutrition is an important part of cancer treatment. Eating the right kinds of foods before, during and after treatment can help patients feel better and stay stronger.

Nutrition is also a major concern for patients who may be faced with additional issues, such as the need for weight management and possible changes in appetite and taste. Another consideration is that a patient’s nutritional needs may change as they go through treatment.

Common eating problems during cancer treatment include:

Appetite loss
Changes in sense of taste or smell
Dry mouth
Lactose intolerance
Sore mouth
Sore throat and trouble swallowing
Weight gain
Weight loss

Sentara Cancer Network offers nutritional counseling with registered dieticians who can help assess a patient's current eating habits and provide advice on how to adjust their diets to meet their nutritional needs.
