"Diabetes and You" at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital

What are the "Healthy Living with Diabetes" and "Diabetes and You" programs?
Group classes that teach you to control your blood sugar through meal planning, exercise, medicine, blood glucose monitoring and stress management.

Who should attend theses programs?
Anyone with diabetes - whether you are newly diagnosed, or you've had diabetes for a while. Your partner or significant other is welcome to attend with you to provide on-going support and understanding.

What are the benefits of taking the class?
Patients who have attended Diabetes education programs have better Diabetes control and less frequent complications, hospitalizations and medical expenses.

What are the classes like?
Certified Diabetes Educators, Registered Dietitians, Registered Pharmacists and other health care professionals teach the group classes. Healthy eating, coping skills, foot and skin care are just some of the skills you will learn. You will also learn the benefits of exercise, how Diabetes medicines work, and how to prevent and treat complications such as low and high blood sugar.

Can I see a nurse or dietitian individually?
Sentara Healthcare offers both group and individual Diabetes education. We have individual consultations with a nurse or dietitian. Our program is recognized by the American Diabetes Association and is based on the National Standards for Diabetes Self-Management.

Classes are offered during the year at a number of sites and times in the Hampton Roads area. Registration information is listed below.

Is there a charge for this course?
Yes, there is a charge for the course, however, most private insurance, group, HMO plans, Medicare and Medicaid provide expanded coverage for diabetes education and supplies. Each policy is different, but most insurance companies cover the cost, check first with your insurance company.

How do I register?
Advanced registration and a physician referral are needed. It is helpful if you bring your most recent A1c and Lipid Profile with you.
