Sentara's specially trained and certified speech therapists implement an active regimen of therapy to help patients create or relearn functional muscle use patterns necessary to initiate or re-establish effective swallowing. In VitalStim therapy, a small, carefully calibrated current is delivered by specially designed electrodes, which stimulate motor nerves in the throat. The muscles responsible for swallowing contract, and the ability to swallow improves. With repeated therapy, muscles are re-educated.
