Finding 35% More Cancers Earlier*
3D Mammography represents one of the most significant advances in breast cancer screening and prevention for all women in nearly 4 decades (when mammography was first adopted in 1969).
Early detection is the most effective tool in approaching breast cancer. Tomosysthesis technology, also known as a 3D Mammogram, allows radiologists to see cancer more easily, and sooner than ever before. Studies have shown that with 3D Mammograms, 35% more cancers are found earlier.*
Another great advantage of 3D mammography is that it helps avoid followup imaging and biopsies and the anxiety that comes along with those call back appointments. The study shows a significant drop in the need to be called back – 38% lower recall rates* – and an 11% drop in biopsy rates.*
3D Mammography may also be particularly useful for detecting cancer in women at high risk of developing breast cancer including those with dense breast tissue and/or a family history.
Digital mammography remains the gold standard for early detection of breast cancer. The Sentara Cancer Network is enhancing its ability to find breast cancer early by providing this option to women in Hampton Roads

The Sentara Cancer Network is the first resource in the region to offer 3D Mammography—a proven advanced technology in detecting breast cancer. Sentara launched this service at two Sentara Comprehensive Breast Centers in early 2013, and the service will be available in eight Hampton Roads locations by the end of 2013. Appointments can be requested in advance and women are encouraged to schedule early.
About the Procedure
When you schedule your mammogram, ask if you can schedule at a location offering 3D Mammography. The staff at the breast center can provide details about the differences between 2D digital mammography and 3D Mammography.
Charges For 3D Mammography
This new technology combines 2D and 3D mammography. Most insurance companies cover the 2D mammography portion of this exam.
There is an additional $50 cost for a 3D mammogram. This covers a $25 radiologist interpretation fee and a $25 technical fee. The fees reflect the additional time it takes to review the added images associated with 3D mammography.
Sentara Cancer Network
One of the benefits of having the comprehensive Sentara Cancer Network is the introduction of new technology, such as 3D Mammography, and advances in cancer detection and care. For women who need breast cancer treatment, the Sentara Cancer Network is Virginia’s only accredited network cancer program. This integrated network sees each woman as an individual, with a team of physicians working for the right combination of treatment and therapies.
