Radiologists look at your X-rays for breast changes that do not look normal and for differences in each breast. They will compare your past mammograms. Doctors also look for lumps and calcifications.

About Mammography
Using a special type of low-dose X-ray, a mammogram can often show tumors before they can be felt.

Mammograms are recommended every year for women older than 40, younger women with symptoms of breast cancer, or those with a high risk for the disease.

All Sentara mammography sites use digital mammography. Sentara also offers a digital mobile mammography van for convenient appointments.

Do not wear deodorant, talcum powder or lotion under your arms or on your breasts on the day of the exam. These can appear on the mammogram as calcium spots.
