To earn primary stroke center certification a hospital must meet national standards and guidelines for improving clinical outcomes for stroke patients. It also must meet critical elements for the long-term success in improving outcomes.

At these hospitals, emergency room physicians work with neurologists and an interventional neuroradiologist, board certified and specialty trained in neurovascular disease. They quickly assess and treat acute stroke symptoms and provide emergency neurology care. Improved quality outcomes due to accurate and speedy assessments, and administering of tPA treatment on ischemic attacks can result in minimizing neurological damage and mortality risks – in effect preserving proper nervous system functions.

The Joint Commission, a national hospital accrediting organization, certifies top-rated stroke programs based on quality and safety in three areas: compliance with national standards for stroke care, clinical guidelines for care; and performance measurement guidelines.
