Patient-Centered Approach Navigating the treatment process can be difficult and daunting for patients. We place tremendous effort on coordinating and navigating you through the treatment process. Our knowledgeable nursing staff works in conjunction with your surgeon to assist you with scheduling appointments and understanding the steps in your care plan. They will also provide patient education, emotional support and guidance through other issues that may evolve.
Multidisciplinary Team The entire caregiving team including your surgeon, nurses, and other supporting providers are committed to working together to ensure the best care for you.
A multidisciplinary team will be involved with every patient and may include thoracic surgeons, pathologists, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, pulmonologists, anesthesiologists, patient navigators, nurses, respiratory therapists, physical and occupational therapists, social workers, chaplains and nutritionists. Biweekly multidisciplinary conferences are held to discuss patient plans of care for many of our patients.
Follow-up with Primary Caregivers We know that getting a surgical consultation in a timely manner is important to you. We will provide new patient consultations within one week of referral. In addition, we make every effort to provide timely communications with referring physicians in regards to initial consults, plans of care, surgery, hospital stay, discharge plans, pathology and follow-up.
Hospital Care Specialty units provide focused patient care and improved clinical outcomes for surgical and cancer patients. At Sentara Leigh Hospital, dedicated physicians and nursing staff provide care to our thoracic patients in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and Progressive Care Unit (PCU). We have a history of caring for thoracic patients in these units for over 25 years. Our physicians and nurses work together as a team to develop education curriculums and specialty training modules. The thoracic surgeons at Sentara Leigh Hospital play an active role in enhancing the skill level of the nursing units.
