If tests confirm that you have testicular cancer, your doctor can use several treatment options.
SurgerySurgery to remove the testicle (a radical orchiectomy) is the standard of care for treatment of testicular cancer. The decision for removal of the lymph nodes (lymphadenectomy) which drain the testicle will depend upon analysis of the type of cancer present. Chemotherapy or radiation therapy may be a part of the treatment plan -- it depends upon the tissue type of cancer and the findings of the staging evaluation using the imaging techniques mentioned above.
RadiationThis treatment uses high-energy radiation to kill cancer cells. In testicular cancer, radiation is mainly used to kill cancer cells that have spread to lymph nodes. For the most part, the treatment of testicular cancer uses lower doses than those needed for other cancers. Special shields protect the healthy testicle.
ChemotherapyDrugs are used to stop the growth of cancer cells, either by killing the cells or by stopping the cells from dividing.
