“Hybrid” Operating Room Opens at the Vascular Center at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital

Sentara Norfolk General Hospital became the first hospital in Southeastern Virginia to unveil a “Hybrid” Operating Room, creating the most technologically advanced operating environment for the patients in Hampton Roads. This new environment allows vascular specialists to provide minimally invasive and hybrid procedures in which both open surgical and minimally invasive procedures may be employed using the most sophisticated technology known to date
It is called a “Hybrid” OR because it combines the newest computer generated technology, the newest radiologic imaging in a sterile operating room environment. So many of the newest procedures require both technologies to provide state of the art care to our area patients. This new ‘Hybrid” Operating room has allowed Sentara to develop the first vascular team of nurses, technologists, and vascular surgeons in the country.
Over 200 patients currently undergo repair of their Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm at Sentara using minimally invasive techniques and over 60 patients undergo repair of their Thoracic Aortic Aneurysm using combined minimally invasive and open techniques.
Vascular specialists from Sentara Medical Group, Vascular & Transplant Specialists, have worked closely with Sentara to develop this new center. This new “Hybrid” OR is the next step in bringing a more innovative and advanced level of vascular care to the patients in the region.
