Welcome to the Black Men in White Coats Youth Summit! We are thrilled to have you join us for an inspiring day of learning, networking, and empowerment. This event is dedicated to fostering diversity in the medical field and providing mentorship opportunities to the next generation of diverse students pursuing careers in healthcare.
A letter from the founder
Greetings,
My name is Dr. Dale Okorodudu and I am the founder of Black Men In White Coats. It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the first Annual Hampton Roads Black Men in White Coats Youth Summit. I’d like to personally thank our amazing partners at Sentara for bringing this summit to your community. Their generosity and effort demonstrate their love for the community. Sometime during the day, I’d ask that you take a moment to thank them for this amazing event!
Black Men In White Coats was founded in 2013 after alarming data revealed the number of Black men applying to medical school was decreasing. Appreciating our youth’s intelligence, it was obvious that addressing the problem required increasing exposure to healthcare careers and access to mentorship. Since then, we have been on a mission to provide these essential elements of success to our communities nationwide.
We’re so glad that you’ve decided to join us today. The day will be filled with wonderful activities, mentorship, and fellowship. You’ll meet like-minded individuals who are destined to impact society. You’ll practice medical skills taught by brilliant clinicians. And of course, you’ll smile, laugh, and have a great time. In all this, our hope for you today is simple: to be inspired!
I’d like you to know that we do this work for you. We do this work for our nation. We do this work for the world. I truly believe that each person here today has the potential to make their mark on society. Our goal is to leave this world better than we found it.
I’d be remiss to not mention our lovely Black women. Thank you for being the amazing people you are. I want to be clear in saying that this event is for you just as much as it is for Black men. We simply name it Black Men in White Coats to call out our brothers who seemingly are being left behind in healthcare. I am so proud of our women who continue to lead in various economic sectors, and specifically in medicine.
I’d like to conclude this letter with a special thank you to our partners at Sentara. Your dedication to impacting your community and beyond is admirable. We are humbled to work alongside you as you host another phenomenal Black Men In White Coats Youth Summit. Kudos to you!
With love and respect,
Dale Okorodudu, MD

Dr. Githaiga is a Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine physician based at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. A native of Nairobi, Kenya, he attended the University of Nairobi School of Medicine (1990 – 1997) and came to the United States in 2001 where he completed his residency training in Internal Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (2001 – 2004) followed by fellowship training in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Cleveland Clinic (2004 – 2007). After a five-year stint in Spokane, Washington, he moved to Hampton Roads in 2012 and took up his current position at Sentara Medical Group. He is on the faculty of Eastern Virginia Medical School and enjoys teaching—and learning from—trainees at various levels of their professional journey.
Besides medicine, he is a fiction author with three published novels, currently working on his fourth. His debut novel, The People of Ostrich Mountain (2020), received the prestigious Kirkus Star and was nominated one of the Best Books of 2020 by Kirkus Reviews. Having grown up in Africa, Dr. Githaiga recognized the power of storytelling for good or bad, and uses his craft to tell stories of Africa and people of color in ways that entertain, inform and inspire readers. His second novel, Ten Thousand Rocks, was a shout-out to Hampton Roads, his adopted home town.
Dr. Githaiga is currently on a quest to complete a marathon in each of the fifty states. He provides updates about the interesting experiences at each destination on his social media page. As a physician, he would like to pass on the message through this endeavor that exercise can be fun, and that big goals can be achieved by tackling one small goal at a time. He also hopes to chronicle the beautiful complexity of America in his travels.
He provides mentorship to the medical trainees he works with and is involved with Summit, a mentoring organization for Black college students, based at ODU.

Dr. Ebony Andrews is a 2004 graduate of Hampton University School of Pharmacy. Since graduation, Dr. Andrews has worked in several pharmacy settings to include hospital, community, long term care, consulting, free clinics, and a methadone clinic. She also served on the Professional Advisory Board for Sears Holdings/Kmart Pharmacy for 2 years. She is member of VPhA, ASCP (American Society of Consultant Pharmacist), and AACP (American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy). Dr. Andrews returned to her Alma Mater at Hampton in 2009 to teach and help train future Pharmacists. Currently, she serves as the Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs and is an Associate Professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice. She teaches Geriatric Pharmacotherapy, Pain Management/Rheumatology Therapeutics, Geriatric Therapeutics, Patient Assessment and Pharmacy Practice Lab. Dr. Andrews served as a preceptor for the School of Pharmacy since 2006 and continues to precept 4th year professional students for the Geriatrics Advance Pharmacy Practice Experience. Over the last two years, she led efforts to bring a NEW PharmD program back to Hampton University. The program recently received Pre-Candidate Status and will enroll its first class for the upcoming 2024-2025 academic year.
Her dedication to mentoring young adults seeking to better themselves is fueled by two major life altering moments: 1) watching her parents sacrifice everything to ensure she received an education despite living in a car, and at one point in a camper on the back of a pickup truck shuffling between the camp grounds in Newport News City Park and Gosnold's Hope park (Hampton, VA) every 30 days during her elementary through middle school years, and 2) unexpected motherhood at the tender age of 19. It is no secret that Dr. Andrews' compassion for ensuring students with life challenges pursuing a future in her beloved profession of pharmacy is one of her top priorities.
In addition to her professional roles, Dr. Andrews is a caregiver of a mother with Alzheimer’s Disease. Having served in this role for almost 20 years along with her elderly father and working in the community with senior citizens, she is dedicated to spreading Alzheimer’s Disease awareness, it’s effects, treatments, and prevention strategies through her work with the AHEAD Sub study recruitment team; a project that is recruiting patients for an Alzheimer's prevention study and spreading awareness of this devastating disease. Dr. Andrews' experience as a caregiver has put her in the forefront to witness the frustration encountered when attempting to obtain the best care for not only patients with dementia but for those with chronic conditions in a healthcare system that is broken on numerous levels. Her continued active engagement in community pharmacy coupled with her own experience has allowed her to not only help her patients but train future pharmacist to advocate for their patients too.

Passage Middle School, leaving a lasting impact on students from her hometown. Starting medical school in 2020 amid the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, she emerged as a charismatic leader, recognized for her advocacy, academic excellence, and commitment to service. She held pivotal roles in the Mulholland Society for Student Government at UVA Medical School, Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Medical Honor Society, and the Student National Medical Association (SNMA) at UVA, among other organizations. If asked, Dr. Meade, would say her proudest accomplishment as a medical student was her time spent as the Co-President of UVA SNMA where through her work she was able to uplift and support minority pre-medical and medical students as they navigate the road to becoming physicians.
In addition to her love of education and mentorship, Aaliyah holds a deep passion for women's health and has found her calling in Obstetrics and Gynecology. She is set to begin her residency at the prestigious Massachusetts General/Brigham and Women’s Hospital, part of the Harvard University affiliated health system in Boston, MA.
Looking ahead, Dr. Meade is excited to continue uplifting and serving underrepresented and disadvantaged communities, striving to pay forward the success she has achieved.
